Northamptonshire defeated Leicestershire by a commanding nine wickets, while Yuzvendra Chahal concluded his tenure in the county championship with another five-wicket haul.
Yuzvendra Chahal, an Indian leg-spinner, produced yet another outstanding performance in the English County Championship, taking five wickets in a match for the second time in a row to lead Northamptonshire to a commanding nine-wicket victory over Leicestershire.
Chahal finished the match with nine wickets after taking five for 134 in the second innings, building on his 4/82 in the first. After Northants set a modest target of 137 after Leicestershire was bowled out for 316, they managed to achieve it in 30.3 overs with the loss of just one player, Gus Miller (11). George Bartlett (54*) and skipper Luke Procter (68*) led the push to complete the victory.
On the last day, Leicestershire were 69/4 but rallied behind a stunning century (120) from Scott Currie and a valiant 48 from Tom Scriven. They had a robust 110-run partnership, albeit Chahal suffered a costly 19-run over in the partnership. Leicestershire were struggling at 303/9 when the leg-spinner struck through, removing Currie for his fifth wicket. Soon after, Saif Zaib (2/61) removed Louis Kimber, ending their innings.
Chahal’s exploits were a continuation of his brilliant display in the previous game, as he took 4/45 and 5/45 as Northants defeated Derbyshire by 133 runs. As a result, Chahal finished his time with the County team having taken 19 wickets in all.
Chahal is showered with affection at Northamptonshire
During the T20 World Cup, Chahal became a member of the side and made his debut in a Royal One Day Cup List A match against Kent, taking five wickets. Following this, he participated in four county championship games and claimed 19 wickets, the last two of which came from him.
Rob Keogh, Chahal’s spin partner, claimed that they refer to the Indian bowler as “the magician.”
Keogh said, “We call him the magician.”
He has a variety of skills. Fortunately, it was too cold for him to use all of his cunning. He claimed to have taken several wickets by simply sticking to the flipper a few times. Clearly, even the opposition is aware of his capabilities. They anticipate him to bowl massive turners, he continued, and he produces the flipper.
Chahal currently hopes to be included in the Bangladesh Twenty20 International team.
