After dismissing MS Dhoni in the pivotal Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Yash Dayal disclosed that he felt awful.
With seven straight losses to start the season, RCB’s chances of qualifying for the postseason were all but gone. They miraculously turned things around, though, and needed to defeat CSK by at least 18 runs in their final league game to guarantee their place in the Eliminator. To remove RCB and secure a spot in the top four, CSK needed to score 17 runs in the last over.
Faf du Plessis, the captain of the RCB, trusted Dayal to bowl the crucial 20th over. When the Bengaluru-based team won the left-arm seamer at the auction, it was a joke. But Dayal had a terrific chance to lead his team past the league stage and turned in some strong performances throughout the season. He was bowled over by the seasoned MS Dhoni, who finished the season with a strike rate of over 220. The former captain of India placed the 26-year-old under extreme pressure by hitting the opening ball for a six. But the young man kept his composure and turned the veteran down on the very next delivery.
Dayal stated that although Dhoni may not play in professional cricket again, he still finds it to be a bittersweet occasion to dismiss the wicketkeeper-batter.
I felt horrible about brushing him off. The frustration with which he left the ground was that you never knew if he would come back or not. I don’t know or care what other people think. Will he ever appear on the ground again? I had a lot of thoughts running through my head at the time. Talking to Jatin Sapru on his YouTube channel, Dayal remarked, “I got a breather, a bit of relief.”
“I told him right now it’s like peanut butter falling from top,” Virat Kohli and Yash Dayal exchanged remarks during the final moments of the match.
When Shardul Thakur entered the field just as Dhoni was losing his wicket, Dayal claimed that Virat Kohli approached him and offered some counsel. The native of Allahabad expressed his confidence in his team’s ability to win the game.
I thought to myself, “Why am I even looking at the scoreboard?” with 11 runs required off of 4. Not that I should. I should concentrate just on my bowling. It was a strike by Shardul bhai. Don’t give pace or bowl straight onto his bat, Virat bhai said. Right now, I told him, it feels like peanut butter is falling from the top Dayal declared, “I can bowl anywhere I want to because I’m so confident.”
Dayal gave up only one run in the final four deliveries as RCB defeated them by a margin of 27 runs to advance to the playoffs for the fourth time in five years.
