Sri Lanka Women have named left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera in their roster for the T20 World Cup 2024, replacing pacer Kawya Kavindi. The squad was searching for a spinner to help their chances in spin-friendly surfaces in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Ranaweera has struck gold. She did not make the Ireland tour and was left out of the Asia Cup squad.
Having played 82 Twenty20 Internationals and taken 91 wickets at an economy rate of 5.86, the 38-year-old offers a plethora of experience to the team. The team’s only remaining alternatives for pace are Udeshika Prabodhani, Achini Kulasuriya, and Ama Kanchana, as Kavindi is no longer available. Conversely, the spinning possibilities include of Kavisha Dilhari, Sugandika Kumari, Inoshi Priyadharshani, and Ranaweera.
Sri Lanka Women’s triumph in the Asia Cup 2024 will give them great heart, and their batting line-up appears extremely strong in front of the world tournament. The batsmen are led by Chamari Athapaththu, while Vishmi Gunaratne and Harshitha Samarawickrama are also in strong form.
During the league stage, Sri Lanka is grouped with formidable nations like Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, and India in Group A. Scotland will play Bangladesh on October 3 to kick off the competition. On October 5, Sri Lanka will take on Australia in their first match.
