South Africa Shines in Post-Lunch Session
Bangladesh struggled in the post-lunch session on Day 1 of the second Test as South Africa’s Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs capitalized on the conditions, leading the visitors to 205/1 by Tea. De Zorzi showcased impressive resilience, converting his solid start into a maiden Test century, while Stubbs added a valuable unbeaten half-century, keeping Bangladesh’s bowling attack at bay throughout the session. The partnership saw over 100 runs added, with South Africa taking firm control of the game.
De Zorzi reached his half-century shortly after the lunch break, despite Bangladesh wasting a review in an attempt to dislodge him. Stubbs, meanwhile, found momentum after a brief lull, dispatching a boundary off Hasan Mahmud and finding the gaps with calculated shots. Bangladesh’s fielders couldn’t capitalize on an outside edge from de Zorzi, as it fell short at first slip, signaling a tough period for the hosts.
Stubbs, de Zorzi Pressure Bangladesh’s Bowling Attack
After the drinks break, de Zorzi continued to rotate the strike effectively, securing his first boundary of the session with a reverse sweep. The duo displayed attacking intent, with both batters driving South Africa’s run rate. Stubbs countered Mehidy Hasan’s spin, launching a six over midwicket, while de Zorzi took on Taijul Islam with another six to close in on his century.
In the final overs before Tea, de Zorzi swept Mehidy for four to reach his milestone off just 146 balls, marking a well-earned century in challenging away conditions. South Africa’s steady performance has left Bangladesh needing a strong response in the evening session to gain a foothold in the match.
