Srikkanth Criticizes Selection Committee’s Decision
Former Indian cricketer and selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth has voiced strong disapproval of the national selection committee’s choice to exclude Ruturaj Gaikwad from both the T20I series against South Africa and the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Despite being a prominent performer in domestic cricket and currently ranking as the third-highest Indian batter in the T20I rankings, Gaikwad’s absence from the senior teams has raised eyebrows. This decision has prompted Srikkanth to question the rationale behind overlooking such a talented player.
Gaikwad has been in excellent form, recently appointed as the captain of the India A side touring Australia. Despite scoring two first-class centuries and consistently performing at the domestic level, he has been sidelined for key international fixtures. Srikkanth expressed his bewilderment regarding this decision during a recent discussion on his YouTube channel. You see, I have no understanding of Ruturaj. Poor guy! What is he going to do? They can reinstate him in the T20I team if he reaches a century, right? he remarked, emphasizing Gaikwad’s credentials and potential.
Concerns Over Player Development
Srikkanth’s frustration is not limited to Gaikwad’s exclusion alone; he also highlighted concerns about the impact of such decisions on the player’s development. Reports had initially suggested that Gaikwad was in contention as a backup opener for the Australia Test series, especially with Rohit Sharma potentially missing some matches due to personal commitments. However, the opportunity ultimately went to Abhimanyu Easwaran, prompting Srikkanth to question the selection committee’s approach toward nurturing young talent like Gaikwad.
“Abhimanyu Easwaran’s performance has been brilliant. I’m not questioning that,” Srikkanth acknowledged. However, he pressed the selectors on the lack of opportunities for Gaikwad, questioning, “What are you doing with Ruturaj? Why aren’t they twirling around with him? What’s the plan?” His comments reflect a broader concern about how young players are managed and given opportunities within the national setup.
Gaikwad’s Impressive Record
Gaikwad’s omission follows an impressive T20I series against Zimbabwe, which propelled him into the top 10 ranked batters globally. Despite this achievement, he found himself left out of the subsequent Bangladesh series as the selectors prepared for the critical Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Srikkanth underscored the inconsistency in Gaikwad’s selection, pointing out the discrepancy between his domestic performances and his treatment at the international level.
When it comes to international cricket, you leave him behind even if he never stops hitting the opposition. Srikkanth groaned. He highlighted the irony that Gaikwad often receives opportunities only in matches for Rest of India or India A, rather than in the senior national team. This approach raises questions about the criteria used for selection and the management of promising young cricketers within the Indian cricket framework.
Srikkanth’s comments not only shed light on Gaikwad’s situation but also serve as a critique of the broader selection policies that may hinder the progress of talented players. As the cricketing landscape continues to evolve, the importance of nurturing and integrating young talent into the senior setup becomes increasingly critical for the future success of the Indian team.

With significant tournaments on the horizon, it remains to be seen how the selection committee will address these concerns and whether Gaikwad will eventually receive the recognition he deserves on the international stage.
