A major two-year contract, valid from October 1, 2024, to March 31, 2026, has been offered to Jayasuriya.
Sanath Jayasuriya has been named as the new head coach of the national side by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The Executive Committee of SLC made the choice.
A significant two-year contract, valid from October 1, 2024, to March 31, 2026, has been offered to Jayasuriya. His successful tenure as the team’s temporary head coach, during which the side turned in some strong performances against cricketing heavyweights India, England, and New Zealand, is followed by this appointment.
Sanath is qualified to lead the national squad thanks to his experience: SLC’s CEO
In December of last year, he was hired as Sri Lanka’s cricket consultant for one year, marking the start of his coaching career. Following Chris Silverwood’s departure in July of this year, he was then named the head coach in an acting capacity. The team performed admirably during the most recent Test tour of England and won a home ODI series against India under his direction.
Although SLC had originally intended to post a job description and take into account both domestic and foreign applicants, Jayasuriya’s influence as a temporary coach made their decision easier.
Ashley de Silva, the chief executive of SLC, previously stated in a statement that Sanath, with his extensive experience playing cricket internationally, is well-positioned to lead the national squad until a long-term solution is found.
With 13,430 runs, the southpaw is still the fifth-highest ODI run scorer in history. In addition, he is the 12th most wicket-taker in the format with 323 ODI dismissals.
