Players from South Africa up for grabs include Tony de Zorzi and Reeza Hendricks.
The overseas players that will be up for grabs in the forthcoming SA20 auction include fast bowlers Shamar Joseph, Naseem Shah, Josh Little, and Josh Hull. Only 13 seats are to be filled by the six teams out of the nearly 200 players who made the shortlist, including 115 South Africans.
With R11.95 million to spend in the auction, Paarl Royals hold the largest purse. Next with R8.275 million is MI Cape Town, and R4.575 million is Pretoria Capitals.
Defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape have R2.845 million, while the Johannesburg Super Kings have R3.925 million. With regard to Durban’s Super Giants, their remaining purse is R2.35 million.
Other international drawbacks on the shortlist are Afghanistan wristspinner Qais Ahmad, Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-battler Kusal Mendis, and New Zealand opener Martin Guptill.
SA20 commissioner and former captain of South Africa, Graeme Smith, said, “I’m excited to see how the teams decide on their final squads from this competitive auction list of players.” Season 3 already has some of the top names in the international T20 circuit committed.
Along with fellow opener Tony de Zorzi, the most well-known South African on the shortlist is perhaps Reeza Hendricks, who was released by Super Kings.
Every squad must consist of 19 players, including a rookie, a wildcard, a maximum of seven international players, and 10 South African players at minimum.
Every team, with the exception of the Super Kings, has revealed their wildcard selection. Dinesh Karthik, a former Indian wicketkeeper-batter, was notably selected by Paarl Royals as their wildcard. Karthik, who announced his retirement from Indian and international cricket in June of this year, will make history by being the first Indian player to play in the SA20.
The Super Kings can lock down their wildcard player until December 30.
The SA20 2025 tournament, which will compete against the Big Bash League of Australia, the ILT20 of the United Arab Emirates, and the Super Smash of New Zealand, will start on January 9 following the auction on October 1.
