Joe Root Joins Paarl Royals for SA20 2025
Former England captain Joe Root has been signed by the Paarl Royals for the SA20 2025 season. Root’s addition comes as a replacement for Jos Buttler, who pulled out of the tournament to prioritize his national commitments.
To fill the gap left by Buttler, the Royals also brought in former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik. Kumar Sangakkara, Director of Cricket for the Royals, expressed his excitement over the new additions, emphasizing how Karthik’s finishing ability and experience will strengthen the team.
Karthik as a Key Signing
Sangakkara highlighted Karthik’s prowess in the back end of the innings and his explosive batting style. “Dinesh Karthik is one of the best finishers in T20 cricket worldwide. With Jos leaving, we’ve managed to split the responsibility between two experienced players,” said Sangakkara, noting that Karthik’s presence brings a new balance to the team.
Root’s Experience to the Fore
Sangakkara also praised Root, not just for his batting skills but for the leadership and knowledge he brings to the dressing room. “Joe Root adds immense value in terms of experience and connecting with other players. I saw his impact firsthand in the IPL, and I’m confident he will be a key player for us,” he added.
Better Equipped for Success
The former Sri Lankan captain believes that the team is better balanced and more equipped to perform under pressure than in previous seasons. “With David Miller as captain and our strong South African contingent, we’re in a good position. Skill is only one part; it’s about executing that skill under pressure,” said Sangakkara, stressing the importance of mental strength.
High Hopes for the Season
While the Royals have struggled to convert key moments into victories in past editions, Sangakkara is optimistic about the upcoming season with the new additions. He believes the combination of Root, Karthik, and Miller will provide the necessary firepower to challenge for the title this time.

This will be Sangakkara’s first time working with Karthik, while he has already seen Root’s impact during their stint together in the IPL.
