Similar to the previous two editions, this competition will face off against T20 competitions in Bangladesh, the UAE, and Australia.
The 2019 SA20 tournament in South Africa will have its third season from January 9–February 8, 2025. Similar to the prior two seasons, a 34-game schedule for the six-team competition will be followed. It will coincide, either entirely or partially, with the Big Bash League in Australia, the ILT20 in the United Arab Emirates, and the Bangladesh Premier League during the busy December–February league cricket season.
Graeme Smith, the SA20 commissioner, stated in a press release that “after two successful seasons, our plan is to continue to own the South African summer and provide everyone the opportunity to enjoy some of the biggest names in world cricket, whether in packed stadiums or via the global broadcast.” In the upcoming months, we will make news about our players, auction, and fixtures; preparations are already well underway. We are very excited to provide to athletes and spectators another amazing sporting event.
After the SA20 ends on February 8, there might not be much time till the start of an ODI tri-series in Pakistan including the other two nations, South Africa and New Zealand. The scheduling for that series, as well as the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February of 2025, have not been formally announced.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) prioritized the franchise competition over South Africa’s Test tour of New Zealand last year, sending a second-string squad for the away match.
The CSA lost the opportunity to earn 30 points in the World Cup Super League standings when they withdrew from a three-match ODI series against the SA20 in Australia during the inaugural season of 2023. Although it proved successful in the end, this decision briefly cast doubt on CSA’s capacity to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape, owned by the India-based Sun Group, which also runs Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, has won both of the SA20 seasons. The Pretoria Capitals, Joburg Super Kings, MI Cape Town, Paarl Royals, and Durban’s Super Giants—last season’s losing finalists—will try to stop them from taking home three crowns.
