Rovman Powell Analyzes West Indies’ 73-Run Defeat
West Indies captain Rovman Powell expressed his thoughts on the unfavorable playing conditions after the team’s 73-run defeat to Sri Lanka in the second T20I at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on October 15. Despite the loss, Powell acknowledged that Sri Lanka effectively utilized the pitch to their advantage, allowing them to level the three-match series. He emphasized the need for his team to reassess their strategy, stating, “We have 24 hours to look at what we can do better.”
Powell highlighted that the pitch was not conducive to T20 cricket, which contributed to his team’s struggles. After Sri Lanka elected to bat first, the West Indies were unable to adapt to the sluggish surface, managing only 89 runs in 17 overs. Powell believed his team could chase down the target of 160 but recognized their failure to adjust to the conditions as a significant factor in their defeat.
Sri Lanka’s Strong Performance and Tactical Execution
Sri Lanka’s captain, Charith Asalanka, praised his team’s performance, particularly the opening partnership that set the stage for their innings. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis provided a solid start, contributing 77 runs in the first 10 overs. Mendis scored 26 runs off 25 balls before Kusal Perera’s quick 24 off 16 balls bolstered the innings. Nissanka reached a half-century with a commendable 54 off 49 balls, helping Sri Lanka post a total of 162/5.
Asalanka credited the decision to bat first as a pivotal moment in the match, noting that the team had aimed for a target between 160 and 170 runs. He expressed satisfaction with the spin bowlers’ performance, particularly debutant Dunith Wellalage, who took 3 wickets for just 9 runs in 4 overs. Asalanka emphasized the importance of the win, stating, “It is a journey, and hopefully, this win will be a start.”

The captain’s comments reflect a strategic understanding of their game plan, with the use of spin effectively disrupting the West Indies batting order. The visitors managed only 21 runs in the powerplay while losing three wickets, unable to cope with the pressure exerted by the spinners. With this victory, Sri Lanka aims to carry momentum into the final T20I and secure the series win.
