IPL Mega Auction Set for November 24-25 in Saudi Arabia
The Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction is tentatively scheduled for November 24 and 25, 2024, in Saudi Arabia. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to confirm the official dates. The board is currently considering different options and will soon announce the final schedule. One of the main concerns is the overlap with India’s first Test match in Australia, scheduled for November 22 to 26, which could clash with the auction. Although this presents a potential issue, the time zone difference between Australia and India is expected to mitigate any direct conflict.
Potential Clash with India’s Test Match in Australia
A significant concern for the BCCI is that the proposed dates for the IPL auction coincide with India’s first Test match in Australia, scheduled to be held in Perth from November 22 to 26. The match, which will be broadcast by Disney Star—one of the IPL’s official broadcasters—could potentially cause scheduling conflicts. However, due to the time difference between India and Australia, there is minimal risk of overlapping events. The auction proceedings are expected to begin in the afternoon, Indian Standard Time, allowing for a clear separation from the Test match.
Riyadh or Jeddah Likely to Host IPL Auction
A few BCCI officials have already visited Saudi Arabia to finalize the venue for the IPL auction. The preferred cities under consideration are Riyadh and Jeddah, with Riyadh being the frontrunner. Despite previous discussions about holding the event in cities like Dubai, Singapore, and London, Saudi Arabia seems to have been finalized as the host nation for the two-day mega auction. With the auction taking place outside India, the franchises have urged the BCCI to announce the venue as soon as possible to help them organize travel arrangements for their delegates. Additionally, teams need to submit their player retention lists by October 31 at 5 PM.
