Irani Cup 2024: In Lucknow on Tuesday, Prithvi Shaw did not pose much of a threat to the scorers, as the Mumbai opener was out for four. It took a magnificent catch by Devdutt Padikkal at second slip to make sure Prithvi’s stint in the middle was limited to seven deliveries.
On the first day of the Irani Cup encounter between Mumbai and Rest of India in Lucknow, Prithvi Shaw’s dismal run in first-class cricket continued as the Mumbai opener failed to pose any threat to the scorers. Before Prithvi Shaw was dismissed by bowler Mukesh Kumar on Tuesday, he had scored just four runs off of seven deliveries.
A delivery that pitched outside the off-stump and straightened sent Prithvi Shaw to his knees. The Mumbai opener found a heavy outside edge after losing control of his instinct to throw his bat at the delivery. Devdutt Padikkal, who was standing in the second slip, was hit by the ball to his right. Padikkal demonstrated his quick reflexes by diving to the right and completing an incredible catch. The on-air pundits expressed amazement at the fielding effort in the slip cordon, which delighted Devdutt.
In the opening session of the Irani Cup encounter at the Shri Atal Vihari Vajpayee Stadium, Mukesh Kumar ran wild with the new ball and rocked Mumbai, the victors of the Ranji Trophy. Mukesh appeared to be making a statement when he was dropped from the Test team and claimed three wickets.
In the third over, Mumbai was dealt a twin blow as wicketkeeper-battler Hardik Tamore was caught behind for zero. Mumbai lost their third wicket in the 12th over, ending the vigil of opener Ayush Mhatre. Mukesh got rid of him for 19 from 35 balls.
Mumbai overcame the early deficits thanks to a resilient partnership between skipper Ajinkya Rahane and veteran batsman Shreyas Iyer, who put up a fifty-plus partnership for the fourth wicket.
Recently, there has been a decline in Prithvi Shaw’s form. Prithvi was playing excellent List A cricket during his August–September spell with County Cricket. But in the County Championship, he could only muster 71 runs in six innings for Northamptonshire.
His results from the Ranji Trophy 2023–24 season stand in sharp contrast to his recent red-ball form. During Mumbai’s winning run, Prithvi was in excellent form, scoring 451 runs in six games, including a century and a fifty. Shaw is not considered for the red-ball cricket team, Team India.
India’s last match saw Shaw play in December 2020. The Mumbai hitter has participated in five Test matches and amassed 339 runs, including an Indian century.
