With a 63-run victory over New Zealand in the 1st Test match played in Galle on Monday, Sri Lanka took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. A 5-wicket haul from Prabath Jayasuriya highlighted the 63-run victory.
at the first Test match at Galle, star spinner Prabath Jayasuriya claimed an incredible five wickets to help Sri Lanka defeat New Zealand by 63 runs, establishing a 1-0 lead in the two-match series on Monday. With Jayasuriya taking five wickets, the hosts were able to successfully defend a target of 275 by bowling out New Zealand for 211.
With 68 runs needed on the last morning, New Zealand faced an impossible task, but their aspirations were short-lived when their main player, Rachin Ravindra, was removed without any delay. Sri Lanka was always in control of the game and needed just 29 balls to win it. On day three, when they were 255 for 4, New Zealand blew a big opportunity to build a commanding first-innings lead. This was the turning point for the team.
With 275 to chase in the last innings, New Zealand needed big partnerships, but none could last despite good beginnings from Tom Latham, Tom Blundell, and Kane Williamson. Though amazing, Ravindra’s 92 wasn’t enough. With 5 for 68, Jayasuriya stole the show, although fellow spinner Ramesh Mendis also contributed significantly with 3 for 83.
Having won the toss and chosen to bat, Sri Lanka encountered early problems as they found themselves at 106/4. But Kamindu Mendis’ magnificent century steadyed the innings, as Sri Lanka amassed an impressive first-innings total of over 300 thanks to contributions from the lower order.
At the top of the order, New Zealand replied well, but their middle and lower order were completely destroyed by Sri Lanka’s spin attack, limiting them to a meager 35-run lead in the first innings. Sri Lanka steadily batted to set a goal of 275 in the second innings, but the visitors found the target to be too high.
Sri Lanka won and created an unassailable lead in the series because to Jayasuriya’s outstanding stint, despite New Zealand’s tenacious pursuit.
On Thursday, the second Test will start in Galle as well.
