The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is contemplating a new approach for the upcoming tenth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), allowing franchises to directly sign marquee players. This decision comes in response to financial difficulties and potential scheduling conflicts with other major cricket events.
Franchises are currently awaiting their revenue share from PSL 9, which remains unpaid due to unsettled dues from key stakeholders. This financial uncertainty adds to concerns over scheduling conflicts with international events, including a triangular series and the Champions Trophy.
The PCB has proposed a window for PSL 10 from April 10 to May 25. However, this schedule may overlap with the Indian Premier League (IPL), which could cause player availability issues and reduce revenue for the PSL. The potential clash with the IPL is a major concern for franchises and the board alike.
According to sources from cricketpakistan.com.pk, the PCB is considering granting franchises the authority to negotiate directly with international players, allowing them to sign one or two marquee players. The board will contribute part of the payment, with USD 500,000 allocated from the broadcast deal to support these negotiations.
Despite these efforts, player availability remains uncertain. The PCB has been in talks with other cricket boards, but no firm agreements have been reached. The clash with the IPL could further limit the availability of key players during this period.
The scheduling of PSL 10 has also caused tension between the PCB and franchises. While the PCB claims the decision was made jointly, franchises argue they had little say. Earlier suggestions for holding the tournament in October or November were rejected, and concerns about Pakistan’s summer heat have stalled discussions about June or July.
