Fast bowler Olly Stone has been named as Gus Atkinson’s replacement in the England squad for the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) series against Australia. Stone, a 30-year-old pacer from Nottinghamshire, joins the team ahead of the five-match ODI series starting on September 19 at Trent Bridge.
Stone, who has played eight ODIs for England and claimed eight wickets, made his ODI debut during England’s 2018 tour of Sri Lanka. He recently impressed during England’s Test series against Sri Lanka, taking seven wickets, which earned him a spot in the squad for the Australia series. His last ODI appearance came in January 2023.
Atkinson, initially included in the squad, has been rested by the ECB after his recent contributions to England’s 2-1 Test series win over Sri Lanka. The 25-year-old fast bowler has taken 11 wickets in nine ODIs for England, with his most recent ODI appearance being against the West Indies in 2023.
Despite his exclusion from the Australia series, Atkinson played a pivotal role in England’s recent Test triumph. The ECB’s decision to rest him aims to manage his workload, ensuring his long-term fitness for upcoming series.
The England ODI squad, led by Jos Buttler, will aim to put up a strong challenge against Australia. However, Buttler’s participation remains uncertain due to a lingering injury that kept him out of the T20 squad. Despite his fitness concerns, Buttler has been included in the ODI lineup.
The first match of the ODI series will be held at Trent Bridge on September 19, with the series concluding in Bristol on September 29.
