Manjrekar: Sundar Not Ashwin's Successor Yet

Washington Sundar’s Impressive Comeback

Washington Sundar made a remarkable return to Test cricket, showcasing his skills with a stellar performance on Day 1 of the second Test between India and New Zealand at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. After being absent from the Test arena since March 2021, Sundar picked up seven wickets, helping India dismiss New Zealand for 259 runs. His best figures in first-class cricket, 7/59, not only highlighted his talent but also positioned him at the forefront of bowlers with exceptional statistics in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for India.

Sundar’s selection ahead of more experienced spinners like Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel raised some eyebrows among experts. However, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar was a vocal supporter of his inclusion. Manjrekar noted that Sundar’s skilful display of off-spin bowling validated the selectors’ faith in him. As Sundar rattled the New Zealand batting order, it became clear that his performance was a testament to the hard work he had put into his game during his time away from the Test format.

Manjrekar lauded Sundar’s exceptional spell, stating that the nature of the pitch called for spinners who could bowl quickly and accurately. He emphasized that on an abrasive surface, the requirement for spinners shifts towards speed and precision rather than artistry. Washi has the advantage of being the quickest now,” Manjrekar commented. He explained that Sundar’s higher release point and consistent bowling speed at around 95 km/h contributed significantly to his success.

While Ashwin, another key spinner for India, struggled in the series against New Zealand, Manjrekar expressed confidence that the veteran bowler still has much to offer. Despite Ashwin’s lacklustre performances, including just one wicket for 94 runs in the first Test, Manjrekar argued against any notion of Ashwin nearing the end of his career. He pointed out that Ashwin’s experience and skills remain vital assets for the Indian team in home conditions.

Sundar’s Promise Yet to Be Realized

Although Sundar’s performance on Day 1 was impressive, Manjrekar cautioned that it was just one outing and that consistency is key for a successful career. “Washi has started well, but it is just one performance,” he stated, highlighting the need for sustained excellence. He acknowledged the unique challenges that spinners face, especially when foreign players struggle to adapt to turning pitches, emphasizing the importance of having specific qualities to succeed.

Manjrekar reiterated that the combination of quickness, accuracy, and subtle variations is essential for spinners to thrive in conditions that support turning the ball. His observations suggest that while Sundar has shown great promise, the cricketing world awaits to see if he can replicate this performance in future matches.

India Ends Day 1 Strongly

Following their impressive bowling display, India ended Day 1 of the second Test at 16/1, with Rohit Sharma being the only wicket to fall for a duck, dismissed by Tim Southee. The Indian batting lineup will look to capitalize on the strong position created by their bowlers as they aim to build a substantial lead over New Zealand in the ongoing match. With Sundar leading the spin attack, there is a renewed sense of optimism within the Indian camp, bolstered by the young all-rounder’s impactful return to the Test format.

As the match progresses, all eyes will be on Sundar to see if he can continue to harness the form that has captured the attention of fans and experts alike. His successful comeback could mark the beginning of a significant chapter in his cricketing career, particularly as he steps into a role that could be pivotal for India’s aspirations in the WTC. With a mix of youthful exuberance and a desire to succeed, Washington Sundar is poised to play a crucial role in India’s cricketing journey ahead.
