Virat Kohli on the Cusp of 9,000 Test Runs
Virat Kohli is set to achieve a significant milestone in Test cricket as Team India prepares to face New Zealand in a three-match series at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The star batter needs just 53 runs to join the prestigious 9,000-run club, solidifying his status as one of India’s finest players.
With an average of 48.89 from 115 matches, Kohli currently owns an amazing record of 8,947 runs, including 30 half-centuries and 29 centuries. Should he reach this landmark, he will become the fourth Indian and the 18th player overall to achieve such a feat, joining cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar.
Kohli Aims for Additional Records Against New Zealand
In addition to reaching 9,000 runs, Kohli is also on track to become only the third Indian batter, following Tendulkar and Dravid, to score 1,000 runs against New Zealand in Test cricket. He has already amassed 866 runs in 11 matches against the Black Caps. If he manages to score 134 runs during this series, he will surpass the tallies of former opener Virender Sehwag and Cheteshwar Pujara against New Zealand.

Despite his remarkable career, 2024 has been a challenging year for Kohli, with only one score above 50 in 16 matches across all formats. In the recent Test series against Bangladesh, he struggled, falling early in both innings. However, his scores of 47 and 29* in Kanpur suggest he is close to regaining his form. This home series against New Zealand presents an excellent opportunity for Kohli to bounce back and reaffirm his status as a premier batter.
