KL Rahul’s Exit Looms as LSG Plans for IPL 2025
KL Rahul’s tenure with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) is nearing its end as he is set to be released by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The franchise is reportedly dissatisfied with his strike rate, a concern that has been a topic of discussion among fans and analysts alike. With the IPL’s evolving dynamics, LSG seems ready to make a significant change in its leadership.
Rahul joined LSG before the IPL 2022 season and captained the team until last year. Under his leadership, the Super Giants reached the playoffs in both 2022 and 2023, but they faltered this year, finishing seventh. The situation escalated when LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka confronted Rahul following a defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 8, fueling speculation about a rift between the two. Although Rahul later visited Kolkata in August, seemingly to mend fences, uncertainty remains about his future with the franchise.
Management Analyzes Performance and Future Prospects
The LSG management, including mentor Zaheer Khan and coach Justin Langer, has conducted an in-depth analysis of Rahul’s performance. Sources indicate that the team has lost most matches where he scored heavily but took considerable time at the crease. This has raised concerns about his strike rate not aligning with the current pace of the game. With the introduction of the Impact Player rule, teams are required to score rapidly, making it difficult for Rahul’s slow scoring to fit into the team’s strategy.
Despite this impending release, LSG has not completely ruled out the possibility of bidding for Rahul in the auction. The franchise may take a strategic approach, deciding on auction day how much of their budget they are willing to allocate for the wicketkeeper-batter. This adds an element of suspense to the upcoming auction as other teams may also be interested in acquiring Rahul’s services.
Mayank Yadav Emerges as Key Future Prospect
In other team news, tearaway speedster Mayank Yadav has made a name for himself with some exceptional performances in IPL 2024. Reports suggest that the LSG management views Mayank as a key player for the future, and he may be prioritized ahead of established leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi on the retention list. His rise has been notable, as LSG invested in him when he was relatively unknown, and he has since demonstrated significant match-winning potential.
“Mayank is LSG’s fine,” said IPL sources. “He shows the kind of influence he can have on a match, and they made an investment in him when no one knew about him. As they aim to improve their performance in the next seasons, this demonstrates LSG’s dedication to assembling a younger, more vibrant team. Additionally, right-handed batter Ayush Badoni and left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan are also expected to be retained as uncapped players.

As the IPL approaches, teams are closely monitoring the retention decisions of rival franchises. The spotlight is particularly on Delhi Capitals, who are anticipated to announce their retention list soon. Rumors suggest that they might release their captain, Rishabh Pant, igniting interest from teams like LSG and Punjab Kings. Both franchises see Pant as a potential skipper, underscoring the competitive landscape of the IPL as teams position themselves for the 2025 season.
