KKR’s Retention Strategy Ahead of IPL 2025
Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have retained six players ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, spending a total of INR 57 crore. The retained players include key figures such as Rinku Singh, who was the top retention at INR 13 crore, and two West Indies all-rounders, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, each retained for INR 12 crore. Additionally, spinner Varun Chakravarthy was retained for the same amount, while uncapped players Ramandeep Singh and Harshit Rana were secured for INR 4 crore each.
Understanding IPL Retention Rules
According to the IPL retention rules, different slabs were set for each player’s retention. The first and fourth capped players are valued at INR 18 crore, the second and fifth at INR 14 crore, the third at INR 11 crore, and uncapped players at INR 4 crore. Consequently, a franchise retaining five capped players would incur a minimum deduction of INR 75 crore. Adding an uncapped player would raise the total deduction to INR 79 crore. This structured approach to retention emphasizes the financial implications of player value in the auction process.
In total, KKR’s actual expenditure of INR 57 crore from their INR 120 crore purse resulted in a deduction of INR 69 crore, leading to a total shortfall of INR 8 crore beyond their actual spending. This discrepancy highlights the impact of IPL regulations on franchise budgets and player retention strategies.
Notably, franchises had the flexibility to negotiate the retention amounts as per their agreement with the players, allowing for variations above or below the stipulated slab prices. However, the rules dictate that the higher amount between the actual expense and the prescribed slab amount is subtracted from a team’s purse. Thus, the INR 69 crore deduction, based on the prescribed slabs (18+14+11+18+4+4), supersedes KKR’s actual retention expense of INR 57 crore.

KKR’s retention leaves them with a total of 19 slots to fill in the auction, including a requirement for six overseas players.
