Renegades’ Historic Chase Secured by Matthews
Melbourne Renegades MTB is Hayley Matthews’s brilliance with bat and ball as they pull off the highest successful chase in WBBL history beating the Adelaide Strikers’ 185, 9 wickets down and 17 balls remaining. After putting up bowling figures of 2 for 28 on a batting pristine batting surface at Karen Rolton Oval, she then scored an aggressive 85 runs that came off just 54 balls with 12 fours and 2 sixes.
Things also were going well for Matthews and Webb, the pair, inside 11 overs had added 90 for the loss of one wicket when Webb got injured and had to be substituted. Alice Capsey was out for a two but the hopes for the Strikers saw themselves quickly dashed by Deandra Dottin, who arrived along with her West Indies fellow and went to add a hefty amount on the scoreboard amassing a 46* off just 18 balls at an incredible strike-rate of 255.56.
If at the least that should have been done, the stakeholders were instead left to consider as one of what has turned out to be a howler of a reign for the majority of them. They have now lost five out of six, with four of those losses coming consecutively after putting up decent batting efforts in two consecutive games. Today, as it happened, they were sent in and scored at a breakneck pace of 56 on the PowerPlay with Smriti Mandhana being the chief aggressor with a knock of 40 coming off 25 balls.
The stutter was momentary but was maintained nevertheless in the run rate as Laura Wolvaardt combined with Tahlia McGrath who scored 49 runs in 24 balls. In the second half of the innings, Matthews picked up two more crucial wickets to strike out, last match’s star Madeline Penna along with Amanda-Jade Wellington, which meant views a commendable knock of 12-ball 24 Orla Prendergast, the Strikers lost by a few runs. Under the circumstances and the number of balls available for the Renegades’ chase, even that could not have been sufficient to prevent their rise to second position on the table.
