Ricky Ponting is the new captain of the Punjab Kings
Ricky Ponting has made a significant move in shaping his support staff at Punjab Kings by appointing James Hopes, the former Australian all-rounder. Hopes previously collaborated with Ponting during their time at Delhi Capitals and brings a wealth of experience to the team. Notably, Hopes also played for the franchise in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) back in 2008, adding a historical connection to his appointment.
A New Chapter for Hopes
At 46 years old, Hopes had the option to extend his contract with Delhi Capitals after Ponting departs from the team. However, he opted to reunite with Ponting at Punjab Kings, where Ponting has signed a four-year deal. Hopes’s decision reflects his loyalty to his former captain and his desire to contribute to a new chapter in Punjab’s journey in the IPL.
Changes in Coaching Staff
The hiring of Hopes marks the end of Charl Langeveldt’s tenure as the team’s fast-bowling coach. Langeveldt served under Trevor Bayliss during the 2023 and 2024 seasons and previously held the role of bowling coach during the 2020 season. As Ponting revamps the coaching setup, the franchise is looking to build a team that can compete more effectively in the upcoming seasons.
Retaining Key Coaches
In addition to bringing in Hopes, Ponting has chosen to retain Brad Haddin, who has been with Punjab Kings as an assistant coach for the past few years. Haddin, who previously worked with Ponting at SunRisers Hyderabad, will continue his role as the franchise’s batting and wicket-keeping coach. His familiarity with the players and the team’s dynamics will be an asset as they move forward.
Continuity in the Coaching Lineup
Ponting has also decided to keep Sunil Joshi, the former India spinner and chief selector, on board as the spin bowling coach. Joshi has been a part of the Punjab franchise for the last couple of seasons. Meanwhile, the franchise has parted ways with Sanjay Bangar, who had a three-year contract as the head of cricket development but saw his agreement terminated midway through his tenure. Other members of the coaching staff, including S&C coach Adrian le Roux and physio Andrew Leipus, have been retained to ensure some level of continuity.

Upcoming Challenges for Ponting
Ponting’s immediate task will be to finalize the player retention list as the franchise prepares for the upcoming auction, aiming to leverage the highest available budget. One player under consideration is Arshdeep Singh, the left-arm pacer, although there are discussions regarding his retention for INR 18 crore. The team may explore using a Right to Match (RTM) card to retain him at a lower price. Additionally, emerging talents like Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma, who impressed during last season, are also in the mix for retention as uncapped players for INR 4 crore each.
