The ICC Rates Green Park Stadium as “Unsatisfactory”
The Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, which hosted the second Test between India and Bangladesh from September 27 to October 1, has been given an “unsatisfactory” rating by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The venue received a penalty point for this rating. The poor conditions were primarily due to the wet outfield, which caused a significant delay in play. On day 1, only 35 overs were possible, and no play occurred on days 2 and 3 due to the wetness of the ground. This led to a shortened game that still saw India emerge victorious.
Venue Issues Affect Match Progression but India Prevails
Despite the weather-related disruptions, India managed to squeeze in enough play to secure a seven-wicket win. Bangladesh was bowled out for just 233 runs in their first innings, and India responded with 285 runs before declaring their innings. In the second innings, Bangladesh was dismissed for just 146 runs, setting India a modest target of 95 runs, which they comfortably chased down. India’s dominant performance with both bat and ball was impressive, considering the limited time they had on the field.
Pitch Rated “Satisfactory,” but Venue’s Reputation Takes a Hit
The ICC gave the pitch used for the match a “satisfactory” rating, in contrast to the venue’s unsatisfactory rating. The pitch ratings are part of the ICC’s assessment of playing conditions, which range from “very good” to “unfit.” This rating system helps maintain standards for international cricket. However, the unsatisfactory rating for the venue adds a blemish to Green Park’s reputation. A venue with an unsatisfactory rating earns one demerit point, and if a venue accumulates five demerit points over five years, it will be suspended from hosting international matches for a year.
