Dulip Samaraweera served in a variety of coaching roles for Cricket Victoria.
Dulip Samaraweera, a former Sri Lankan Test cricket player, is not permitted to hold any positions or titles inside the Australian cricket system. In addition, he received a 20-year suspension. Notably, according to some anonymous sources, the player was discovered engaging in a “coercive” relationship with a female player, giving them an unfair edge while under Victoria’s coaching setup.
Moreover, Cricket Victoria chose to withhold the sources’ names due to the seriousness of the situation. Citing the safety concerns of all those working for and on behalf of the Australian state, the officials made it abundantly evident that any activities that are in opposition to Victoria’s culture would not be allowed at all.
In our opinion, the behavior was completely repulsive and a violation of all that Cricket Victoria stands for. Speaking up, the victim in this case has shown amazing courage and strength of character. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Cricket Victoria Chief Executive Nick Cummins stated, “She will continue to receive our ongoing support to allow her to achieve her goals on and off the field.”
The safety and welfare of every employee at Cricket Victoria are of the highest priority, according to management. “We will always support our culture of speaking up,” he continued, adding that we will not put up with any actions that compromise that position or our people.
Dedicated to offering a secure environment for all participants and staff: Cricket Australia
In the meantime, Cricket Australia (CA) expressed their opinions on the Samaraweera matter after taking notice of the circumstances. It was verified that throughout his tenure with Cricket Victoria, the Sri Lankan cricket player engaged in inappropriate behavior. According to section 2.23 of the CA code of conduct, this was his result.
The Australian Cricket Board further elucidated their position by stating that they are dedicated to ensuring a safe workplace for both players and staff, and that established rules and regulations also apply to territorial organizations in addition to state boards. This effectively means that the cricket player will not be able to work in any form, not even in franchise competitions like the Big Bash League (BBL).
According to the conduct commission, Samaraweera acted improperly and violated section 2.23 of the code of conduct for the CA. Samaraweera worked with Cricket Victoria at the time the claims of improper behavior occurred. Under integrity regulations and policies that also apply to state and territory associations, the CA Integrity Department looks into complaints that are submitted to it. According to Cricket Australia’s the announcement, the Conduct Commission considers cases that are presented to it by CA Integrity.
For all players and staff, CA and [Cricket Victoria] are dedicated to maintaining a safe workplace, and the wellbeing of individuals who are mistreated is of utmost importance. The board statement ended, “We firmly encourage the reporting of inappropriate behaviors, which can be made via the core integrity hotline or directly to the CA integrity unit.”
Additionally, when the Sydney Herald followed up with Samaraweera, the cricket player was unavailable to comment on the growing issue or the Australian Cricket ban.
