Tasmania's batting collapses against WA.

Western Australia’s Dominant Innings Victory

Defending champions Western Australia achieved a commanding innings victory over Tasmania, propelling them to the top of the Sheffield Shield table. After declaring their first innings at 460 for 9, thanks to stellar performances from players like Cameron Cartwright (153) and Sam Fanning (68), WA’s strong batting set a formidable target. Tasmania responded with scores of 317 and a disappointing 98 in their two innings, resulting in a comprehensive defeat by an innings and 45 runs.

Ashton Agar played a pivotal role in Western Australia’s success, particularly in the second innings, where he took 3 wickets for just 12 runs in 17.5 overs. His performance came shortly after Australian chairman of selectors George Bailey emphasized the need for left-arm spinners to step up, showcasing Agar’s readiness to fill that gap. Agar’s contributions not only aided in bowling out Tasmania cheaply but also underscored his importance to the team’s strategy moving forward.

Brody Couch Makes History with Hat-Trick

In a remarkable display of skill, Brody Couch became the first bowler in Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield history to claim a hat-trick. His three wickets came in the same over after tea, dismissing Jake Doran, Lawrence Neil-Smith, and Sam Elliott to decimate Tasmania’s hopes of a comeback. This impressive feat highlighted Couch’s potential and added to the overall domination displayed by WA’s bowling attack throughout the match.

WA’s Bowling Attack Proves Unplayable

The Western Australia bowling unit, particularly the left-arm pace attack led by Joel Paris and complemented by Agar, was instrumental in Tasmania’s downfall. Paris demonstrated his prowess by taking 4 wickets for 45 runs in the first innings and followed up with 2 for 18 in the second. Despite missing strike bowler Matthew Kelly due to a hamstring injury, the remaining bowlers stepped up, showcasing depth and skill on a pitch that provided minimal assistance. This comprehensive performance solidifies WA’s status as a powerhouse in the Sheffield Shield, having won the last three titles.
