BBL, WBBL Set for Trading Window
Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) are set to introduce a new feature called a ‘trading window’ which will last for 10 days after all the ongoing editions come to an end. The teams will make player decisions soon and even the contracts, right after the last matches of the seasons 2024-2025 take place.
What is Included in the Trading Window?
Within this window, franchises will be in a position to engage in player trades, sign players entering the last year of their contracts, or even exchange overseas player drafts. The purpose of the trading system is to enhance the management of the teams throughout the tournament by allowing the teams to modify their teams even before the tournament starts.
Trading Window Dates for BBL as well as WBBL
WBBL assessment period will run from December 2 to December 11, 2024. However, the BLACKCAPS BBL player exchange window begins on January 28, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. AEDT and end on February 6 at 5:00 p.m. AEDT.
Player Limits and Contract Conditions
Teams will be allowed to have up to 10 players prior to the trading window and 12 players post-window for the BBL. For the WBBL, teams can have a maximum of 8 players before the window and up to 10 after it. Notably, many players across both leagues have multi-year contracts, which could influence the trades and player movement during this time.

Alistair Dobson, Executive General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, emphasized that the trading windows would add “certainty and stability” for players and clubs, helping them navigate the list management cycle.
