Mitchell Marsh Steps Up in Cameron Green’s Absence
Mitchell Marsh has expressed his readiness to take on additional bowling responsibilities during the upcoming five-match Test series against India, filling the gap left by Cameron Green. Green has been ruled out for the entire summer as he prepares for back surgery to address persistent stress fractures. Marsh has kept himself fit and is eager to contribute to both batting and bowling for the Australian team.
Marsh stated that he views the all-rounder role as crucial, especially when bowlers need a breather. He acknowledged the significance of contributing a few overs, explaining, “If you look back at the last few seasons, our all-rounders have bowled maybe 10 to 13 overs a game, which is not really a lot, but those 10 to 13 overs can be really important.” His mindset reflects a commitment to preparing thoroughly for his expanded role in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
Cameron Green’s Injury and Team Adjustments
Cameron Green, who batted at No. 4 during the recent Test series against the West Indies, will miss the series against India and the subsequent Test tour of Sri Lanka. Steve Smith is expected to return to his usual batting position at No. 4, allowing Marsh to shoulder a more substantial bowling load during this crucial summer of cricket.
Marsh is optimistic about his physical condition, stating, “Physically, I’m feeling really good. I’ve been really well looked after.” However, despite his positive outlook, he has only bowled more than 10 overs in a Test match once since returning during last year’s Ashes series. In the past year, he has also only bowled 21 overs across 40 white-ball matches, primarily focusing on his batting due to previous fitness issues.

Marsh Prepares for Increased Workload
When asked about the maximum number of overs he could realistically bowl in a Test match, Marsh emphasized his flexibility and readiness to meet the demands of captain Pat Cummins. He explained, “You never really like to put numbers on it. Once you’re in the field of battle, you bowl as much as the captain needs you to bowl, and I’ll be prepared for that.” His preparation will involve a careful buildup to ensure he is match-ready for the first Test against India.
Marsh expressed his disappointment for Green, wishing him a swift recovery and a strong return to cricket. “We’re all shattered for Cam. He loves playing cricket for Australia,” he said. He acknowledged the challenges Green faces due to his extended absence but remains optimistic about Green’s future contributions. “When you go through these things, there’s an opportunity to come back better, and I have no doubt that he will,” Marsh concluded, showing solidarity with his teammate.
