Donald admitted that the team ultimately signed Shamar despite having an interest in both Gleeson and Little.
Allan Donald, the coach of the Durban Super Giants, was overjoyed to see Shamar Joseph signed for the SA20 2025 season. The former South Africa bowler was impressed by the West Indies international’s performance in red-ball cricket and decided to invest in Shamar for the upcoming season. Donald confirmed, though, that Shamar was their first pick and that the franchise ultimately preferred having Richard Gleeson in the mix.
The 57-year-old clarified that the objective was to assemble a potent pace group, and he thinks Shamar blends right in. The Ireland pacer Joshua Little was also taken into consideration by the think tank, he said, but Shamar was chosen in light of his earlier-season victory against Australia.
This evening, as we sat around the table, we discussed getting Richard Gleeson. In this version of the game, he excels at what he does. We were unable to win, so we had to leave right away. Is Josh Little the best option? So Shamar Joseph is our target? Thus, in the end, it was up to the child. Because you need to have enough weapons in your arsenal, we only needed two overseas fast bowlers, thus it was simple for us, Donald said.
Shall we pursue Josh Little? So Shamar Joseph it is? It ultimately came down to the child. You have to have enough weapons in your inventory, so for us, it was simple because we only needed two quick bowlers from overseas,” he continued.
Shamar played for the Lucknow Super Giants, Durban’s sister team, in the 2024 Indian Premier League. He just made one appearance against the Kolkata Knight Riders and was expensive. The franchise did not trust him with the role again after that. In the CPL 2024, he made nine wickets at an economy rate of 9.31 while playing eight games for the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
