In an exciting battle at the Zayed Cricket Stadium, Ireland defeated South Africa in their maiden T20I match, tying the two-match series at one. The Adair brothers, Mark and Ross, were instrumental in enabling Ireland to win by ten runs. This was Ireland’s second-ever international victory versus South Africa overall and their first in T20Is.
Against South Africa, Ireland achieved their highest-ever T20I l score of 195-6 while batting first after the latter decided to field after winning the toss. The highlight of the Irish innings was Ross Adair, who hit his first T20I century in 57 balls. Ireland’s innings was built around his blistering performance, which featured nine massive sixes, and captain Paul Stirling, who made a crucial 52 runs in a 137-run opening combination.
Even with a late collapse that saw Ireland lose six wickets for forty-three runs, they set a formidable goal of 196 for South Africa. Reeza Hendricks scored his second consecutive half-century (51) and Matthew Breetzke added another 51 as South Africa responded with a strong opening partnership. Ryan Rickelton, the opener, contributed with a quick 36 off of 22 balls, but the Proteas found it difficult to maintain the needed run rate.
Ireland gained the upper hand thanks to a pivotal spell from Mark Adair in the 19th over. Finishing with fantastic figures of 4-31, he removed Wiaan Mulder and Breetzke in consecutive deliveries before claiming Nqabayomzi Peter later in the over. South Africa finished at 185-9 thanks to his efforts and Graham Hume’s economical bowling in the last over, in which he gave up just seven runs and claimed a wicket.
Being the first team to win a game while batting first at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in the last eight T20I held there, the victory was historic for Irish cricket. Additionally, it was their second straight victory in international cricket versus South Africa; their first came in an ODI.
Now, the two teams will concentrate on a three-match ODI series that kicks off on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi.
