Varun’s five-for secures India’s three-wicket win over SA
Varun Chakravarthy seems to get better and better with each passing time he returns to this shortest format. He took five wickets in the three-match series against Bangladesh and worsened his performance against South Africa. He had a three-wicket haul in the first T20 against SA, before living out his dream and completing a five-for in the second, but unfortunately, India lost.
South Africa restricted India to a low total of 124 runs in the first T20, and a superlative effort was required from the Suryakumar Yadav-led side in the second – and it was provided by Varun. He ran through the batting line-up, taking out the wickets of Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, and David Miller – and that put South Africa on the back foot. However, Tristan Stubbs scored a fine 47 not out, as South Africa leveled the series.
Meanwhile, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra too seemed enchanted by Varun’s performance, analyzing his bowling variations. He felt that the Pune native had very good googlies, while he could also bowl the ‘Chahal’ slow in the air, which most batters never read.

Yuzi (Yuzvendra Chahal) also bowls sort of slowly, Varun Chakaravarthy does that too. And he bowls at the three pies with subtle variations, Chopra tells on his YouTube channel.

He somewhat operates the leg-cutter that one leg-cuts whilst googly. There are two balls, and the accuracy is knife-sharp always bordering on ball-to-ball length. He makes sure never to bow too short or too long, which gives him the zone for the change in pace. Ravi Bishnoi kept saying these, but they were the ones he normally does, and makes them go very fast over the pitch. And he added, ‘Players nowadays have started picking fast bowlers since they have become accustomed.
