Lungi Ngidi Gears Up for SA20 Season with Paarl Royals
Lungi Ngidi, the spearhead of the Paarl Royals’ bowling attack, is set for an exciting third season of the SA20. Since joining the Royals, Ngidi has established himself as a vital player, taking 24 wickets in 19 matches over the last two seasons at an impressive average of 24.45 and an economy rate of 8.38. Despite hailing from the fast pitches of the Highveld, the Royals recognized his potential and brought him to Boland Park, where his bowling skills have thrived.
Ngidi’s success in the SA20 has been attributed to his adaptability and mastery of various bowling techniques, particularly slower balls and cutters. The unique conditions at Boland Park, influenced by the intense summer heat of the winelands, have allowed Ngidi to showcase his skills effectively. Reflecting on his journey, he stated, “I’ve been over the moon that they have picked me up,” underscoring his gratitude for the opportunity to represent the Royals.
Fan Support Fuels Paarl Royals’ Aspirations
The 28-year-old seamer has quickly become a fan favorite, with the passionate supporters of the Royals playing a significant role in his experience. Ngidi appreciates the strong expectations from the fan base, admitting that they are vocal when the team is underperforming. “They always come out in their numbers. Very happy to have that kind of crowd support,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of the fans’ presence and enthusiasm.
Despite reaching the playoffs in both previous SA20 seasons, the Royals have faced setbacks, falling short against the Pretoria Capitals and Joburg Super Kings. Ngidi remains optimistic about breaking through in the upcoming season, especially with new signings like former England captain Joe Root, Afghanistan’s Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, and T20 World Cup winner Dinesh Karthik joining the squad.
As the Royals aim to finally reach the final after their playoff appearances, Ngidi believes that this season holds great promise. “We’ve already tasted the past two seasons, but I think Season 3 is going to be a blockbuster,” he declared, signaling the team’s determination to push past the semi-final hurdle.
