It was the 38th time the seasoned Indian leg-spinner had made an appearance in the first class.
At the County Ground in Northampton, where Northamptonshire and Derbyshire are now playing in County Championship Division Two, seasoned Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal claimed his 100th first-class wicket.
Northamptonshire bowled Derbyshire out for just 165 thanks to Chahal’s five-for after Derbyshire was bowled out for 219 in the first innings. When he got Zak Chappell on Day 2, he reached 100 wickets in his first-class career. In his 38th first-class match, the 34-year-old—who is thought to be among the best spinners in contemporary white-ball cricket—reached the milestone.
Chahal ultimately concluded with bowling stats of 5/45 from his 16.3 overs. The Haryana spinner also removed Wayne Madsen, Aneurin Donald, Alex Thomson, and Jack Morley from the game. In addition, Chahal has 354 T20 wickets from 305 games and 219 dismissals from 138 matches in List A cricket.
Rain called off play on Day 2 prematurely, but Northamptonshire concluded at 178/5 in 46.2 overs following Chahal’s heroics. With Rob Keogh (46) and Lewis McManus (10) at the wicket, the home team leads by 232.
Both of Prithvi Shaw’s innings are lost.
Prithvi Shaw, another Indian cricketer, did not do well with the bat, while Chahal had a great first innings with the ball. He struck the opening ball of the first innings for a boundary, but right-arm pacer Chappell got him for a second ball. As for the second innings, he was bowled out by right-arm bowler Harry Moore after managing only two runs off eight deliveries.
Two teams placed at the bottom of the points standings are Northamptonshire and Derbyshire. Having lost all 11 of their games, Northamptonshire is ranked No. 7, while Derbyshire is ranked No. 8 having won only one of their 11 games. Luke Procter and company are well-positioned to win this match and have a good chance to start quickly.
